The future of Chadwell Allotments secured by potential new fencing and a committed Police Team!
Today at Chadwell Allotments the Redbridge Neighbourhood Watch Association was pleased to deliver a £1000 cheque to Chadwell Safer Neighbourhoods Team - towards the cost of better security fencing around the perimeter of the green space.
Near the junction of the allotments with Park Villas a vulnerable area of fencing has resulted in an influx of antisocial behaviour which culminated in several arson attacks in recent months. Residents and allotment holders have vented their frustration against the council for not securing the area and a RNWA application for funding towards secure fencing was rejected by Area 5 Councillors last year. The RNWA have worked with local residents and the Chadwell SNT in getting permission and an agreement from locals to affix stronger fencing. Moreover, through recent funds obtained by the group we have been able to provide a cheque towards the cost of implementation of the fencing amounting to £1000.
The good news does not stop there! The RNWA has also allocated a £1000 kitty towards the hire costs of community halls for Watch meetings and will allow NHW who need to pay for hall hire grants of up to £20 to pay for such facility. Each applicant will be able to apply for up to 3 Grants of £20.00 which will be paid on submission of invoices.
The RNWA aims to work on a number of other crime reduction schemes in the following months in the hope of encouraging others to form NHW's. In particular we intend to hold a community event in Ilford Town centre on the 24th April 2010 from 12:00 - 16:00. Here we intend to hold community stalls providing Crime Prevention advice, crime prevention devices and much more. We hope to have attendance from the Police, Local ASBO Team and other crime prevention partnership groups. In particular, after the recent arson attacks the Chadwell SNT gave solace to residents by talking to residents, patrolling more vigorously and attending various public meetings.
Our Chairman Wilson Chowdhry said:
"The RNWA has been quiet for some months, much due to a reduced membership and difficulty to attract new members to our executive Committee. We read about the campaign to reduce Arson attacks in the Joint press release from the Redbridge branch of the London Fire Brigade department and our local Police in last weeks Ilford Recorder. Our membership immediately wanted to become a part of such an important programme and at our last regular meeting, we agreed to fund better security arrangements at Chadwell Allotments, as an indication of our support for the great work these two services provide in the borough. The Chadwell SNT and our local Fire Team have been very helpful in providing information to the Redbridge Allotments Team detailing how to create a safer environment at the allotments. We wish them well with their drive to further reduce crimes of this nature in Redbridge. Our commitment to fund hall hire costs for NHW's comes from a growing concern that it has become difficult for groups of our kind to obtain what once was a readily available free resource. Hopefully our scheme will make it more viable for new groups to form and existing groups to continue."
With reference to our community event Wilson said:
"Some of our membership felt our group was not well known enough and it was with this in mind, that we have organised an event for the 24th of April in the Town Centre. It is hoped that when people meet with us and hear about what we have done both as NHW coordinators and as the executive of the RNWA - that we might stimulate new NHW Groups and fill the gaps on our executive committee."
