Chris Connelley reports on our King George Protest!

Message from Chris Connelley (sic):

Into Ilford for the the first political protest of the year, namely Redbridge Green Party's street rally in support of King George Hospital A and E. On this bitterly cold day, outside the town hall, the borough's political elite huddled together, in high spirits and heavily padded, like a suburban homage to Brezhnev- era Soviet political style, to present a united front against the latest threat to this beleagured hospital; and to encourage somewhat bemused passers by to sign up to the growing online petition.

Both Ilford MPs were there, along with a cluster of local councillors from all three mainstream political parties, along with the local National Union of Teachers, the estimable Gerry Gable from anti-racist magazine Searchlight and a full complement from your local Green team, headed up by event organiser Wilson Chowdry.

The messages were consistent and sound. Basically, we love the NHS. We love it even more when its local, and worry that time spend travelling to Romford's Queens Hospital in the event of any scaling down here might cost lives.

Having already fought- and won- this battle for KGH once before, the tone was upbeat, positive and collaborative.

With all three major local newspapers present, here's hoping the issue gets valuable publicity at the start of the new year, thus diminishing the greatest danger for any campaign, namely the perception by the bureaucrats who ferment these lunatic plans that they can get away with what they want because nobody gives a damn.

On this most inhospitable day, the message was clear. A lot of us do. From radically different- even unlikely- perspectives. And we ain't going to roll over. Ever.
